The Technological University of the Philippines Visayas (TUPV), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), officially launched the first-ever Research and Development Laboratory for the Improvement of Wastewater from Sugar-Related Industries in the region.
Negros, known as the “Sugar Bowl of the Philippines,” is home to 13 of the country’s 25 operational sugar mills, based on data from the Sugar Regulatory Administration. Recognizing the environmental challenges posed by wastewater generated from sugar milling operations, this groundbreaking initiative aims to enhance research on effective wastewater treatment solutions specific to the sugar industry.
The laboratory will serve as a vital research hub, empowering TUPV to lead innovative studies focused on sustainable industrial practices, environmental protection, and technology-driven development.
During the inauguration, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between TUPV, First Farmers Holding Corporation, and Victorias Milling Company, signaling a strong collaboration between the academe and private sector in advancing environmental research.
This laboratory marks the second facility in Negros Occidental supported under DOST-PCIEERD’s Institution Development Program (IDP). As of today, the DOST-PCIEERD has funded 60 IDP projects nationwide, amounting to ₱312 million. These include 30 laboratories in Luzon, 16 in the Visayas, and 14 in Mindanao.
This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to contributing meaningful research for national development while addressing pressing environmental issues in the region.
