Overcoming multiple design revisions, Technological University of the Philippines Visayas (TUPV) student innovators reeled in the championship in the Digital Agriculture category, along with a special award for Agriculture Technology Development, during the Department of Agriculture’s Young Farmers Challenge at the Baguio Convention Center, Baguio City, July 17.

The team, “Reel Time Tech,”  was composed of  mechanical engineering students Eric Joshua Castor, Heart Andrew Oquiana, Melvin Mark Grandia, Rhys Ryan Gimay, John Arlu Magbanua, and their coach, Engr. Kevin Claveras.

The innovators developed ReelView, an aquaculture monitoring and control system designed to be user-friendly and accessible for small-scale farmers.

“The aim is to create a device that bridges the gap between technology and small-scale farmers resolving issues like complexity of technology and the cost,” explained Claveras.

Furthermore, Claveras felt proud of the team's efforts, noting that they developed their idea from scratch going through numerous iterations before arriving at a functional and scalable system.

“TUPVians are really capable of reaching the top. And the awards that our students got are proof of that,” shared Claveras.

Following this achievement, the team planned to scale the project by tapping in local government agencies to adopt their system in hopes to improve issues in aquaculture.

“I hope that at least in Negros, we can help alleviate the problems in aquaculture, ‘One Reel Time Tech at a time!’,” he added.
